Historic stone monuments and modern structural landmarks in Africa

Africa's architectural heritage spans an enormous chronological range, from the ancient stone complexes of the northeast and the monumental earthen mosque traditions of the west to the colonial-era urban cores that restructured coastal and inland cities from the nineteenth century onwards. The continent's indigenous building traditions are less documented than those of other regions but represent a body of work of considerable spatial and technical ambition.

North Africa contains the most visited concentration of historic fabric, with well-preserved medinas, caravanserais and Islamic monuments supported by established tourism infrastructure. Sub-Saharan cities produced distinctive colonial and post-independence architecture that is increasingly recognised as significant, alongside surviving examples of vernacular building traditions that predate European contact.

Access to many sites requires local guides and advance planning, particularly outside the main tourist circuits. Heat is a factor at most open-air sites and seasonal timing affects comfort considerably. Your money goes a long way across much of the continent, making extended itineraries practical even when covering significant distances between destinations.
