Why travel to Cabo Frio?

Cabo Frio is all about the beach life. Praia do Forte is the star, with its long stretch of soft sand and cool, clear water – great for swimming, sunbathing or spotting sea turtles if you’re lucky. Surfers and water sports lovers flock to Praia das Dunas and Praia do Peró for their strong waves, while Ilha do Japonês offers calm, shallow waters ideal for families and snorkelers. Beyond the beaches, the city’s Passagem neighborhood is a charming area to wander, with colonial houses, cobbled streets and local seafood restaurants. History buffs will enjoy the São Mateus Fort and the blue-and-white São Benedito Chapel, both offering a glimpse into the region’s past. But there are a few things to keep in mind: Cabo Frio gets very busy on weekends and holidays, especially in summer, so book ahead and expect crowds. The water is beautiful but can be surprisingly cold, even in summer (hence the name, which means “Cold Cape”). Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, especially near Ilha do Japonês, so bring repellent. Nightlife is more low-key than in nearby Búzios, but there are plenty of good restaurants and beach bars. Still, if you’re looking for a blend of natural beauty, local flavor and laid-back fun, Cabo Frio is a fantastic choice.
