Why travel to Mar del Plata?

This is the place where Argentines come to play in summer. The beaches stretch for miles, from bustling Playa Bristol to surfer-friendly Playa Grande and quieter coves further south. The boardwalk (La Rambla) is always alive with street performers, food stands and the iconic sea lion statues. Beyond the sand, you’ll find elegant architecture, great art museums and a surprisingly rich food scene-don’t miss fresh churros at Manolo or seafood at the Club de Pesca. The nightlife is legendary, with bars, theaters and clubs that go until dawn. Mar del Plata can get crowded (and pricey) in January and February and the Atlantic waters are brisk even in summer. Petty theft can be an issue on busy beaches and in crowded areas, so keep an eye on your belongings. The weather is famously changeable – pack for both sun and wind.

Safety information overview

General safety

Health & Medical
7
Medical care is good, with hospitals and clinics throughout the city. Pharmacies are easy to find. Bring any prescription meds and sun protection. Tap water is safe, but if you have a sensitive stomach, stick to bottled water.
Accessibility
5
Main streets, beaches and attractions are accessible, but some older buildings and the boardwalk have steps or uneven surfaces. Beach wheelchairs are available at some beaches — ask at lifeguard stations.

6
Tap water is generally safe to drink, but some visitors prefer bottled water for taste. Public drinking fountains are rare, so bring a refillable bottle, especially for beach days.
