Why travel to San Cristóbal de las Casas?

San Cristóbal offers a fascinating blend of indigenous culture and colonial architecture that feels both deeply authentic and surprisingly international. The city's compact historic center is perfect for wandering, with its pastel-colored buildings, impressive churches and leafy plazas where you can watch local life unfold. The surrounding highlands are home to traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages, providing insights into living Mayan cultures. For craft lovers, the markets overflow with traditional textiles, amber jewelry and indigenous art, while foodies can indulge in local specialties alongside international cuisine influenced by the city's diverse population. However, San Cristóbal isn't without its challenges. As the poorest state in Mexico, Chiapas has visible poverty and you may encounter beggars in tourist areas. The city's high elevation (2,200m) means weather can change rapidly, with chilly nights even when days are warm. Safety concerns exist in certain areas, particularly the northern neighborhoods where a local group called "Los Motonetos" operates. The cobblestone streets and hills can make walking tiring, especially for those with mobility issues. Despite these considerations, most visitors find San Cristóbal's unique cultural richness and affordability more than compensate for any drawbacks.

Knowledge before you go

  • Pack layers; cool highland nights surprise many visitors.
  • Stay central for walkability; cobblestone streets and steep hills make taxis useful at night.
  • Visit Santo Domingo’s artisan market, but ask before photos – many vendors prefer permission first.
  • Use San Cris as a Chiapas base: book day trips early for waterfalls, canyons and nearby villages.

How to travel to San Cristóbal de las Casas

The closest airport is Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport (also known as Tuxtla Gutiérrez Airport), about an hour's drive away. From there, you can take a shuttle or taxi to San Cristóbal. Many travelers also arrive by ADO bus from other Mexican cities like Oaxaca, Cancún or Mexico City. The bus station is a short taxi ride from the center. If you're planning to explore Chiapas more broadly, renting a car at the airport is an option, though not necessary for exploring San Cristóbal itself.

Access summary

  • From Tuxtla Gutiérrez Airport (TGZ): Shuttle or taxi about 1–1.5 hours.
  • From Tuxtla Gutiérrez city: OCC/ADO buses around 1.5 hours.
  • From Mexico City: Direct night buses 13–16 hours; flights via TGZ faster.

San Cristóbal is a compact city where walking is the best way to explore the center. The cobblestone streets and hills can be challenging but add to the charm. For longer distances or day trips, several options are available: tuk-tuks and taxis provide convenient transport within the city (MX$50 – 70 (£2.03 – 2.84) per ride), colectivos (shared vans) connect to surrounding attractions and organized tours are ideal for visiting more remote areas. There's no Uber as of May 2025.

Safety information overview

General safety
6
San Cristóbal is generally safe for tourists, especially in the Historic Center and southern neighborhoods. Avoid northern areas, particularly at night, where a group called "Los Motonetos" operates. Use common sense: don't display valuables, stick to well-traveled routes and take taxis at night.
Health & Medical
6
Basic medical services are available in the city, though for serious issues, larger facilities in Tuxtla Gutiérrez may be necessary. The high altitude (2,200m) can cause mild symptoms for some visitors. Bottled water is recommended to avoid stomach issues.
Accessibility
4
San Cristóbal presents challenges for those with mobility issues. Cobblestone streets, hills and numerous steps (like the 280 to San Cristobalito or 79 to Guadalupe Temple) make navigation difficult. Many historic buildings lack modern accessibility features.
Tap water
2
Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Stick to bottled or purified water, which is widely available at stores and restaurants. Many accommodations provide filtered water for guests.
