Ruins, reefs and boho beaches

Tulum stands on Mexico’s Caribbean coast as a town where ancient ruins overlook turquoise waters and white sand beaches. The old Mayan site sits atop cliffs, offering views of the ocean below while visitors explore temples built centuries ago. Modern Tulum features small cafes, art galleries and eco-friendly hotels that respect the environment. Local markets sell handmade crafts alongside fresh seafood dishes like ceviche. The area remains known for its laid-back atmosphere rather than large crowds or high-rise buildings.

Why travel to Tulum?

Tulum is a dream for travelers who crave both relaxation and adventure. The iconic Tulum ruins offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into Maya history, while the endless stretch of beach is dotted with boutique hotels, eco-chic resorts and lively beach clubs. The nearby cenotes – natural freshwater pools – are perfect for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Downtown Tulum (Tulum Pueblo) has a more local vibe and is great for street food and budget stays, while the Hotel Zone is all about bohemian style and Instagrammable spots. Downsides? Tulum can be pricey, especially in the Hotel Zone and it gets crowded in high season. Sargassum seaweed sometimes affects the beaches and petty theft can happen – keep an eye on your belongings and avoid walking alone at night in unlit areas. Infrastructure is basic in places (expect patchy WiFi and some rough roads), but the natural beauty and laid-back energy more than make up for it.

Knowledge before you go

  • Start early; ruins and cenotes are best before crowds.
  • Carry cash for taxis, cenote fees and smaller beach spots; ATMs can be unreliable.
  • Use bikes by day and pre-agreed taxis at night; distances are longer than they look.
  • Split your stay: cheaper eats in Tulum Centro, then one beach day in the hotel zone.

How to travel to Tulum

Most visitors fly into Cancún International Airport (about 2 hours by car or ADO bus). Private shuttles, taxis and ADO buses run frequently from the airport to Tulum. Colectivos and buses connect Tulum to Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Valladolid. Renting a car is useful for exploring cenotes and ruins, but not essential if you stay local.

Access summary

  • From Tulum Airport (TQO): Pre-booked shuttle or taxi, about 30–45 minutes.
  • From Cancún: ADO bus or private shuttle to Tulum, around 2 hours.
  • From Playa del Carmen: Direct ADO buses or colectivos to Tulum, about 1–1.5 hours.

Where to stay in Tulum

Tulum offers everything from luxury eco-resorts and boutique beach hotels to budget hostels and guesthouses in town. The Hotel Zone is pricey but scenic; Tulum Pueblo is more affordable and social. Book early for high season (December–April). Some hotels have basic amenities and patchy WiFi-check reviews if that matters to you.

How to get around Tulum

Tulum is spread out: the beach, ruins and downtown are several kilometers apart. Rent a bike or scooter for flexibility or use taxis (always agree on the fare first). Colectivos (shared vans) run along the main highway to Playa del Carmen and nearby cenotes. Walking is pleasant in town, but the beach road can be long and hot. Public buses connect to other Riviera Maya towns. Parking is limited and traffic can be slow in high season.
