Why travel to Eleuthera?

Eleuthera rewards travelers seeking an authentic Bahamian experience away from the crowds and commercialization found on more popular islands. The contrast between the calm turquoise Caribbean waters on one side and the dramatic deep blue Atlantic on the other creates a unique geographical feature rarely seen elsewhere, especially visible at the Glass Window Bridge, often called the 'narrowest place on Earth.' The island's 100+ beaches are often deserted, giving you the feeling of having discovered your own private paradise, whether you're exploring the pink sands of Harbour Island or the remote beauty of Lighthouse Beach. Beyond its natural splendor, Eleuthera offers fascinating historical sites like Preacher's Cave, where the island's first settlers took shelter and charming settlements that showcase authentic island life. Adventure seekers can explore blue holes, caves and excellent snorkeling spots, while those seeking relaxation can simply unwind on pristine beaches. However, visitors should be prepared for the island's rural nature – WiFi can be unstable, public transportation is limited and you'll need to rent a car to properly explore the island's length. Hurricane season (June-November, especially August-October) should also be considered when planning your trip.

How to travel to Eleuthera

Eleuthera is accessible via three small airports: North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), which is convenient for accessing Harbour Island and Spanish Wells; Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB) in central Eleuthera; and Rock Sound Airport (RSD) in the south. Most visitors fly into North Eleuthera from Nassau, Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Atlanta. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Nassau to Harbour Island or Spanish Wells, then connect to mainland Eleuthera. If you're island-hopping within the Bahamas, small inter-island flights and private charters are available, though schedules can be limited.

Access summary

  • From North Eleuthera (ELH): Short taxi ride to nearby resorts, 10–20 minutes.
  • From Nassau: Domestic flight to ELH/GHB/RSD, usually about 20–30 minutes.
  • From Florida (Miami/Fort Lauderdale): Direct flights to ELH, roughly 1–1.5 hours.

Where to stay in Eleuthera

Accommodation in Eleuthera ranges from boutique luxury resorts to charming guesthouses and vacation rentals. Unlike Nassau, you won't find massive all-inclusive resorts here, which is part of the island's charm. Harbour Island offers more upscale, boutique options and is considered the most developed area. Mainland Eleuthera provides a mix of small hotels, beachfront cottages and vacation homes scattered throughout various settlements. The island's long, narrow geography means choosing your location carefully is important – staying in central areas like Governor's Harbour provides better access to the entire island. Book well in advance for peak season (December-April) when options are limited.

How to get around Eleuthera

Exploring Eleuthera requires planning as the island is long (110 miles) but narrow (just over a mile wide in most places). Renting a car is essential for properly experiencing the island, as public transportation is very limited. The Queen's Highway is the main road running the length of the island, but don't let the name fool you – it's a simple two-lane road with a maximum speed of about 45mph. Remember that driving is on the left side of the road, following British colonial tradition. For visits to nearby Harbour Island or Spanish Wells, water taxis are available from various points on mainland Eleuthera.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Eleuthera is generally safe with low crime rates. Exercise standard precautions with valuables, especially on beaches. The main safety concerns are natural – strong currents at certain beaches, sunburn and dehydration. During hurricane season (June-November), monitor weather forecasts closely.
Health & Medical
6
Medical facilities on Eleuthera are limited, with small clinics in major settlements but no major hospitals. Serious medical issues require evacuation to Nassau or the US. Bring necessary medications and a basic first aid kit. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
Accessibility
5
Accessibility is challenging throughout Eleuthera. Most beaches, attractions and accommodations lack wheelchair accessibility features. Unpaved roads, natural sites and historic locations present barriers for those with mobility issues. Some newer resorts offer limited accessible accommodations, but advance research is essential.
Tap water
5
While technically safe in most areas, many visitors prefer bottled water due to the taste of local tap water. Most accommodations provide bottled or filtered water. Staying hydrated is important in the tropical climate, especially during outdoor activities.
