Best forest destinations in Europe
Old-growth pine valleys and dense broadleaf canopies across Europe
Europe's forests are more fragmented than those of other major forested regions but include ancient woodland remnants, boreal wilderness zones and temperate rainforest pockets of considerable ecological significance. The most intact forest systems are found in the northern and eastern interior and the Atlantic fringe, where old growth and near-natural woodland survives in areas that escaped intensive agricultural and industrial development.
Forest visitor infrastructure is well developed across most of the continent, with marked trail networks, forest lodges and guided wildlife programmes supporting accessible exploration across a wide range of forest types. Several countries have invested seriously in rewilding programmes that are gradually restoring ecological complexity to previously degraded landscapes, with large predator and herbivore reintroductions adding a wildlife dimension to forest travel that was absent a generation ago.
Seasonal timing affects the forest experience considerably, with spring woodland flowers, summer canopy cover and autumn fungi seasons each offering distinct rewards. The most biodiverse ancient woodland sites are often small and require research to locate. Guided wildlife and ecology programmes deliver considerably more than unaccompanied walking in terms of species identification and ecological understanding.
