Best wildlife destinations in Oceania

Marine sanctuaries and unique endemic species spots across Oceania

Oceania's wildlife is defined by the extraordinary endemism that results from millions of years of island isolation. Species found nowhere else on earth, ancient reptile lineages, flightless birds, unique marine ecosystems and some of the most diverse coral reef wildlife on the planet all exist within a region that rewards serious wildlife travel.

Marine encounters are a particular strength. The waters of the region support whale and dolphin populations, shark aggregations, sea turtle nesting sites and reef ecosystems of extraordinary richness. Land-based wildlife, while often less visible than in Africa or South America, includes species with no equivalent elsewhere and can be deeply rewarding for those who take the time to find them.

Conservation context matters more here than in most regions. Island species are disproportionately vulnerable and some of the wildlife experiences on offer exist against a backdrop of genuine ecological fragility. Choosing operators and destinations that take that seriously, and visiting with an awareness of the pressures these ecosystems face, is part of engaging with Oceania's wildlife responsibly.

Island in Australia
Lord Howe Island
Secluded paradise with crystal reefs and cliffs
Woodhen, a flightless bird once nearly extinct, now roams freely across the island. Providence petrels nest in burrows on Mount Gower's slopes each breeding season. Green turtles and reef fish fill the lagoon, protected as a marine park since the 1980s. Red-tailed tropicbirds nest on cliffs around the island, performing aerial courtship displays each spring.
City in Australia
Darwin
Tropical gateway to ancient wetlands and reefs
Saltwater crocodiles cruise the rivers near Darwin, among the largest reptiles on Earth. Jumping crocodile cruises let visitors watch the animals leap for food near the boat. Flatback turtles nest on quiet beaches within a short drive of the city. Magpie geese and other waterbirds gather by the thousands in nearby wetlands each dry season.
Forest in Australia
Daintree Rainforest
Lush canopy whispers ancient rainforest secrets
Cassowaries stalk the Daintree's undergrowth, among the world's largest and most endangered flightless birds. Saltwater crocodiles bask along the Daintree River, spotted easily on guided boat cruises. Tree kangaroos, an unusual sight for the marsupial family, live in the rainforest canopy. More than 12,000 insect species have been recorded within this ancient, UNESCO-listed forest.
Reef in Australia
Great Barrier Reef
World's largest living coral wonder
Clownfish and parrotfish dart through coral gardens stretching across the Great Barrier Reef's turquoise water. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on sandy cays scattered throughout the reef system. Minke whales pass close to reef waters each winter, drawing snorkellers for rare encounters. Reef sharks and manta rays patrol the deeper channels between coral bommies.
