Best wildlife destinations in Oceania
Marine sanctuaries and unique endemic species spots across Oceania
Oceania's wildlife is defined by the extraordinary endemism that results from millions of years of island isolation. Species found nowhere else on earth, ancient reptile lineages, flightless birds, unique marine ecosystems and some of the most diverse coral reef wildlife on the planet all exist within a region that rewards serious wildlife travel.
Marine encounters are a particular strength. The waters of the region support whale and dolphin populations, shark aggregations, sea turtle nesting sites and reef ecosystems of extraordinary richness. Land-based wildlife, while often less visible than in Africa or South America, includes species with no equivalent elsewhere and can be deeply rewarding for those who take the time to find them.
Conservation context matters more here than in most regions. Island species are disproportionately vulnerable and some of the wildlife experiences on offer exist against a backdrop of genuine ecological fragility. Choosing operators and destinations that take that seriously, and visiting with an awareness of the pressures these ecosystems face, is part of engaging with Oceania's wildlife responsibly.
