Best volunteer travel destinations in Europe

Historic heritage restoration fields and organic farm networks in Europe

Conservation and rewilding projects across parts of Europe offer a different model of volunteer travel than the wildlife programmes common elsewhere, built around habitat restoration and reforestation rather than direct animal care.

The destinations on this list range from rewilding and habitat restoration projects requiring physical outdoor work to farm-based volunteering through established networks that exchange labour for food and accommodation. Both suit travellers looking for genuine, structured contribution.

Checking the specific time commitment required matters here, since many European programmes expect several weeks rather than a few days to be worthwhile. Many run for considerably shorter periods than the conservation work common elsewhere. Packing sturdy footwear also matters considerably given how physical much of this work can be. Most placements run for several weeks at minimum.
