Ancient Wonders and Roman Grandeur

Izmir connects Asia and Europe through its coastal location on Turkey’s western shore. The city stands near ancient Ephesus, a UNESCO site with well-preserved Roman ruins. Izmir’s port has shaped trade for centuries while its markets buzz with local life. Nearby Ephesus features marble streets, temples and amphitheaters once used by philosophers and merchants. The region balances modern energy with historical depth. Visitors explore bustling bazaars alongside archaeological sites. Izmir serves as a gateway to both cultural heritage and seaside relaxation along the Aegean coast.

Why travel to Ephesus?

Ephesus offers a truly immersive historical experience that few places in the world can match. The UNESCO World Heritage site boasts incredibly well-preserved ruins including the iconic Library of Celsus with its grand facade and towering columns, the massive Great Theater that once held 25,000 spectators and the Temple of Hadrian with its intricate carvings. The Terrace Houses provide a fascinating glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles of wealthy Romans with their frescoes and mosaics still visible. For those interested in religious history, Ephesus holds special significance as it's mentioned several times in the Bible and is near the House of the Virgin Mary. However, there are some challenges to be aware of when visiting. The site can become extremely hot, especially in summer months, with little shade and heat reflecting off the smooth white stones. Large crowds from cruise ships can overwhelm the site between 9:30am and late afternoon, making it difficult to fully appreciate the ruins or take unobstructed photos. The smooth marble streets can be quite slippery, especially in inappropriate footwear. Also, there are no concession stands within the ruins, so bringing your own water and snacks is essential. For the best experience, arrive right when it opens at 8am to enjoy the site before the crowds and heat become overwhelming.

Knowledge before you go

  • Buy combo ticket including Terrace Houses.
  • Enter from upper gate to see Library of Celsus first before crowds arrive in the morning.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and sun protection; the marble streets are slippery when wet or shaded.
  • Visit House of Virgin Mary nearby in morning; combine with Ephesus for full biblical context.

How to travel to Ephesus

Ephesus is located near the town of Selçuk in western Turkey. The nearest major airport is in Izmir, about an hour's drive away. From Izmir, you can take a train to Selçuk or join an organized tour. Many visitors also arrive via cruise ships that dock at nearby Kusadasi port. If you're coming from other parts of Turkey, buses connect to Selçuk from major cities. From Selçuk, local dolmuş (minibuses) or taxis can take you to the Ephesus archaeological site.

Access summary

  • From Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB): Train or taxi via Selçuk, about 1 hour.
  • From Izmir city: Train or bus to Selçuk, then short taxi, 1–1.5 hours.
  • From Istanbul: Domestic flight to Izmir, then train or transfer to Ephesus.

Where to stay in Ephesus

Most visitors stay in nearby Selçuk, which offers a range of accommodations from budget hostels to mid-range hotels or in the coastal resort town of Kusadasi which has more upscale options. Selçuk is more convenient for early morning visits to beat the crowds and heat, while Kusadasi offers beach access and more nightlife. Book well in advance during peak season (June-August) as accommodations fill quickly, especially when cruise ships are in port.

How to get around Ephesus

Ephesus has two entrance gates - the Upper Gate and Lower Gate. Most tour buses start at the Upper Gate for an easy downhill walk, but if you arrive early or late in the day, starting at the Lower Gate (closer to Selçuk) might help you avoid crowds. The site is entirely walkable, though the terrain can be uneven and slippery in places. If you park at one gate and exit through the other, taxis and horse carriages are available to take you back to your starting point. Audio guides are available at both entrances for self-guided tours.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Ephesus is generally very safe for tourists. Avoid lingering near the Turkish Army base, especially after dark and never take photos there. The main concerns are heat-related issues in summer and slippery marble surfaces throughout the site.
Health & Medical
7
Medical facilities are available in nearby Selçuk, but serious issues may require transport to larger hospitals in Izmir. Heat exhaustion is a real risk in summer months. Bring necessary medications as pharmacies may have limited supplies of specific brands.
Accessibility
5
The archaeological site presents challenges for those with mobility issues. Uneven terrain, slippery marble surfaces and few resting areas make navigation difficult. There are no dedicated facilities for wheelchair users and the historical nature of the site limits modifications.
Tap water
4
Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Bring bottled water, especially when visiting the ruins as there are no concession stands inside. In May 2025, water availability is limited within the archaeological site.
