Castle city with Sunday market and bonito

Kochi is the capital of Kochi Prefecture on the Pacific coast of Shikoku. Its centre is compact, with a castle on a low hill, a tram line through the main streets and Hirome Market, an indoor food hall. Kochi Castle keeps both its original keep and its palace buildings, which few castles in Japan do. Every Sunday a long street market sets up near the castle. The signature dish is seared bonito. Katsurahama beach and Mt. Godaisan are within reach by bus. The Shimanto River is a longer day trip by train. The city suits two days or a night on the way across Shikoku.

Why travel to Kochi?

Kochi Castle is the first stop for most visitors. Few castles in Japan have both their original keep and palace buildings. This one does. The Sunday Market sets up every week near the castle with farmers and fishers selling produce and snacks. At Hirome Market you can eat seared bonito and other local dishes at shared tables next to residents. In August the Yosakoi Festival fills the downtown streets with dance teams in bright costumes. Sakamoto Ryoma, the Edo-period figure most associated with the end of the shogunate, is closely tied to the city. A hometown museum and a memorial museum cover his life. A statue of him is at Katsurahama, a curved beach with pine trees about 30 to 40 minutes away by bus. Swimming is prohibited there but the views are the point. Mt. Godaisan has Chikurin-ji Temple, a botanical garden and a lookout over the city and the bay. The Museum of Art, Kochi has Japanese and foreign works including pieces by Chagall. The city itself fits into a day and a half, with Katsurahama and Godaisan each taking half a day. With more time the Niyodo River area near Ino is about 20 minutes away by train. The Shimanto River is about two hours away. Both work as day trips from a hotel in the city.

How to travel to Kochi

Most visitors arrive by train via Okayama or by air. Okayama is on the Shinkansen line, about 45 minutes from Shin-Osaka and about 3 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo. From there the Nanpu limited express runs to Kochi in under three hours. From Takamatsu the JR Dosan Line limited express takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. Heavy rain can suspend the Dosan Line so keep a backup plan in wet seasons. Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ) has flights from Tokyo Haneda in about 1 hour 30 minutes, from Osaka Itami in about 45 minutes, from Nagoya in about an hour and from Fukuoka in about 45 minutes. A bus takes around 30 minutes to Kochi Station. Highway buses reach Kochi Station from Okayama in about 2.5 hours, from Takamatsu in about 2 hours and from Osaka in about 5 hours. By car, Okayama and Takamatsu are each about 2 hours from Ino Interchange near the city.

Access summary

  • From Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ): Limousine bus to Kochi Station, about 30–40 minutes.
  • From Osaka: JR to Okayama, Limited Express Nanpu to Kochi, roughly 3.5 hours.
  • From Tokyo: Shinkansen to Okayama, Nanpu limited express to Kochi, around 6 hours.

Where to stay in Kochi

Most visitors stay either around Kochi Station or in the downtown area near Harimayabashi and Hirome Market. Business hotels and mid-range hotels are the main types in both areas, with a few hostels and a few hotels that have hot spring baths. Staying near the station is the most convenient for early trains and buses. Staying downtown puts the market, the tram line and the evening izakaya within walking distance. Hotels fill up during the Yosakoi Festival in August so book early for those dates. The airport is about 30 minutes by bus, so you don't need to stay near it for an early flight. If you plan to visit the Niyodo River area you can also treat Ino as a quieter base, about 20 minutes from Kochi Station by train.

How to get around Kochi

The Tosaden tram is the easiest way to get around Kochi.

Trams and walking:
Lines run south from Kochi Station and east to west through downtown.
The centre is compact and fairly flat so walking and bicycles work well too. Harimayabashi to the castle is about a 10 to 15 minute walk. Taxis are plentiful downtown but drivers rarely speak English, so carry the address written in Japanese.

Sightseeing buses:
For the sights outside the centre, the MY-YU sightseeing bus leaves from the north side of Kochi Station for Mt.
Godaisan and Katsurahama. It mainly runs at weekends, on holidays and in summer, so check the schedule before relying on it. Regular buses reach Katsurahama in about 30 to 40 minutes and a taxi takes about 30.

Beyond the city:
A car isn't needed in the city.
For farther trips, the Niyodo River area is about 20 minutes by train to Ino. For the Shimanto River a limited express runs from Kochi Station to Nakamura in about two hours.

Food in Kochi

Kochi's food comes mostly from the Pacific, with local sake and yuzu as the other regional favourites. Seafood is central to most dishes, so vegetarians should ask before ordering.

Katsuo no tataki:
Katsuo no tataki is seared bonito sliced thick and often served with garlic and onion.
Bonito passes the coast in spring and again in autumn. The autumn fish tends to be fattier.

Sawachi ryori:
Sawachi ryori is a large shared platter of sashimi and sushi that's meant for groups.
It's served at many izakaya and restaurants in town.

Hirome Market:
Hirome Market is an indoor food hall with communal tables where you can mix dishes from several stalls, which makes it an easy casual dinner.
The Sunday Market adds street snacks and fresh produce.

Izakaya fill up in the evening and local sake is a big part of the dining culture, while yuzu juice drinks are sold widely as a non-alcoholic option. Supermarkets and convenience stores near the station cover quick meals.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Kochi is very safe for travellers, with low street crime and quiet streets in the evening. The main risks are natural. Typhoons and heavy rain can disrupt trains and roads. Coastal areas face tsunami risk. Swimming at Katsurahama is prohibited.
Health & Medical
7
Health risks are low and tap water is safe. Kochi has large hospitals and clinics though English-speaking care is limited, so carry travel insurance. Summers are hot and humid, so carry water and plan indoor stops such as the museum or castle at midday.
Accessibility
6
The city centre is mostly flat, which suits walking and wheelchairs. The tram runs through downtown. The castle has steep keep stairs and slopes to reach it. Mt. Godaisan and Katsurahama need bus rides and some walking on slopes.
Tap water
9
Tap water is safe to drink in Kochi, a city with clean rivers nearby. Shops and vending machines sell bottled drinks near the station and downtown. Carry a refillable bottle on hot days since summers are humid and sightseeing involves a lot of walking.
