Oita Airport sits out on the Kunisaki Peninsula, right by the Seto Inland Sea. Recently nicknamed Oita Hello Kitty Airport for Expo 2025, you’ll spot cute signage, themed shops and a cheery vibe all year round. The terminal is compact but offers great food (noodles, sushi, local bentos), classic omiyage shops, free Wi-Fi, a footbath and panoramic sea views from the observation deck.

Transportation to the region’s favorite sights is excellent, including express buses to Beppu, Yufuin and Oita City as well as a super-scenic hovercraft zipping directly across the bay. Note there’s no rail line, so plan around bus or car connections. The airport is open from 7:30 to about 21:30, so late arrivals are rare. Buses are timed to flights, but during off-peak hours, options may be limited, so always check schedules.

Because the airport was built on filled land, winds off the sea sometimes affect flights and thick fog can cause occasional cancellations. But delays are rarely long, staff are helpful and lounging at the footbath or in the credit-card-access Kunisaki Lounge makes waiting comfortable.

With Hello Kitty in the terminal, a real hovercraft ride and easy bus or rental car connections to onsen country, Oita Airport makes the gateway to Kyushu’s hot springs both relaxing and memorable.

Helpful tips for Oita Airport

  • Check visa requirements; Japan allows short stays for many nationalities.
  • Arrive at Oita Airport 90 minutes before domestic flights to allow time for security and baggage claim.
  • Use the free Wi‑Fi in the terminal to download maps, local transport schedules and weather updates before departure.
  • Oita Airport is close to the hot spring town of Beppu; consider a short train ride to experience regional onsen culture.

How to get from Oita Airport to popular destinations

To Oita City:
The standout option is the hovercraft, taking about 35 minutes directly to Oita City, running in sync with flight arrivals and departures. Express buses also connect in about an hour, but at peak times traffic may add delays. Taxis are available but more expensive for the hour drive.

To Beppu:
Direct limousine buses link the airport to Beppu’s hot springs and hotels in about 45–60 minutes for JP¥2,000 (£9.45). Buses run with most arrivals, but note schedules slacken late at night.

To Yufuin:
Yufuin, known for its picturesque onsen and mountain views, is accessible via direct bus from the airport in about 70 minutes. The service is daily and coordinated with flights, but seats can sell out at weekends and holidays.
