Tanzania Airports
Tanzania's air transport infrastructure is defined by several major airport hubs that cater both to international and domestic travelers, supporting the country's booming tourism and trade sectors. The most prominent airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport, situated in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital. This airport serves as Tanzania’s largest and busiest gateway, connecting to key global cities and providing excellent access to southern wildlife reserves. Another major international hub is Kilimanjaro International Airport in the north, which primarily serves tourists visiting Mount Kilimanjaro and the renowned northern safari circuit including Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Additionally, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport on Zanzibar Island facilitates access to the tourist-friendly archipelago and beach resorts, connecting with various regional and international destinations. Domestic air travel complements these hubs, connecting mainland cities and safari gateways efficiently.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), located about 12 kilometers from Dar es Salaam city center, is the busiest airport in Tanzania and serves as the main hub for the national carrier, Air Tanzania, as well as international airlines such as Emirates, Turkish Airlines and KLM. The airport features three terminals serving private, domestic and international flights, with modern amenities including duty-free shops and lounges. Its strategic coastal location makes it a gateway to southern Tanzania’s safari parks like Ruaha and Selous.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), near Arusha and Moshi, is the preferred entry point for tourists heading to northern Tanzania's famous parks and Mount Kilimanjaro. The airport is served by airlines like Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Flydubai. It offers access to northern safari destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on Zanzibar Island connects the exotic island resorts with mainland Tanzania and global cities. It handles both international flights and domestic links operated by Air Tanzania and Precision Air, facilitating travel to and from Stone Town and Zanzibar’s popular beaches. This airport has a recently renovated international terminal and offers facilities such as cafes, shops and comfortable waiting areas.
In addition to these key international airports, Tanzania has numerous domestic airports like Arusha Airport, Mwanza Airport, Bukoba Airport and Mbeya (Songwe) Airport that provide vital air links within the country. Domestic flights are operated mostly by Precision Air, Coastal Aviation, Auric Air and Air Tanzania, connecting travelers to remote safari lodges, national parks and commercial centers across the mainland and Zanzibar. Tanzania lacks a significant low-cost carrier market but benefits from reliable, scheduled regional services that make exploring its vast and diverse landscape accessible and efficient.
