Why travel to Somalia?
What makes Somalia truly unique is its remarkable combination of historical treasures and natural wonders that few travelers have experienced. The Laas Geel cave paintings, dating back over 5,000 years, offer some of Africa's best-preserved Neolithic art, while the white sands of Mogadishu Beach and the cyan waters of the coastline provide stunning tropical scenery without the crowds found in more popular destinations. Beyond these highlights, Somalia's national parks like Kismayo offer opportunities to spot rare East African wildlife including elephants, giraffes, zebras and the unique Hunter's hartebeest. The country is slowly rebuilding its tourism potential, with areas like Somaliland (a self-declared state) becoming more accessible. However, travelers should be aware that security concerns remain significant in many regions, infrastructure is limited and travel should only be undertaken with proper research, local guides and awareness of the current political situation.

How to travel to Somalia
International access to Somalia is limited but improving. Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport receives flights from neighboring countries and some Middle Eastern hubs, while Hargeisa's Egal International Airport in Somaliland has connections to Ethiopia, Djibouti and the UAE. Turkish Airlines operates flights to Mogadishu from Istanbul. Entry requirements are strict and vary depending on your destination within Somalia. Visas are mandatory and should be arranged well in advance. For Somaliland, visas can be obtained on arrival at Hargeisa airport or through Somaliland diplomatic missions. Security clearances may be required for certain regions and it's highly advisable to arrange airport transfers and local guides before arrival.
Access summary
- Fly into Mogadishu Airport (MGQ) from Nairobi, Addis Ababa.
- From Ethiopia/Kenya: Flights to MGQ/HGA; risky overland borders.
- No major national airline; fly Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian.
Where to stay in Somalia
Accommodation options in Somalia are limited and concentrated in major cities. Mogadishu and Hargeisa offer the widest selection, from basic guesthouses to a few international-standard hotels like the Oriental Hotel in Hargeisa. Security is a primary concern, so hotels with proper security measures are recommended. In remote areas, accommodations are very basic or non-existent and travel may require camping arrangements through tour operators. Advance booking is essential and it's advisable to seek recommendations from experienced travelers or reliable local contacts.
