Ancient heritage meets natural wonders

Oman presents a landscape of quiet beauty and rich history. The country stretches along the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, where golden deserts meet turquoise seas. Its capital, Muscat, features bustling markets alongside centuries-old forts that overlook the Gulf of Oman. Traditional souks display handwoven textiles and silver jewelry while coastal towns welcome visitors with calm beaches and clear waters ideal for swimming or diving. The region’s culture values hospitality deeply, reflected in daily life from tea ceremonies to grand festivals celebrating heritage.

Why travel to Oman?

What makes Oman truly special is its remarkable ability to balance tradition and modernity. Unlike some of its flashier neighbors, Oman has developed thoughtfully, preserving its cultural heritage and natural beauty. The country boasts five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from ancient forts to archaeological treasures, all telling the story of Oman's rich maritime history and Bedouin traditions. Beyond the cultural experiences, Oman's diverse landscapes offer endless adventures. You can swim in the crystal-clear waters of Wadi Shab, trek through the 'Grand Canyon of Oman' at Jebel Shams, explore the fjord-like inlets of the Musandam Peninsula or camp under the stars in vast desert expanses. Throughout your journey, you'll encounter the legendary Omani hospitality, where locals might invite you to sit on ancestral rugs and share tea, creating those authentic connections that make travel truly meaningful.

How to travel to Oman

Most international visitors arrive in Oman through Muscat International Airport, which has connections to major cities worldwide. The airport is modern and well-equipped, serving as the main gateway to the country. Some travelers also arrive via Salalah Airport in the south, particularly during the Khareef season. Cruise ships dock at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat and Port of Salalah, bringing visitors for day trips or longer stays. Land borders with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Yemen exist, though the Yemen border is currently restricted. Most nationalities require a visa to enter Oman, which can usually be obtained online before travel.

Access summary

  • Muscat & interior: Fly to Muscat International (MCT) from major global hubs.
  • Salalah & Dhofar: Fly direct to Salalah (SLL) or connect via Muscat.
  • Musandam & north coast: Fly to Khasab (KHS) via Muscat; Oman Air hub.

Where to stay in Oman

Oman offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury international chains in Muscat and Salalah to boutique hotels in historic buildings. Desert camps provide unique experiences in the Wahiba Sands, while mountain resorts offer cooler retreats in summer. Budget options are limited outside major cities. During peak tourist season (October-April) and especially during the Khareef in Salalah (June-September), booking well in advance is recommended.

How to get around Oman

Traveling by car is the most popular and practical way to explore Oman, with generally excellent road conditions throughout the country. Rental cars, preferably 4x4 vehicles for desert and mountain exploration, are widely available. Be cautious of camels and goats on roads outside major cities and note that sudden flooding can occur after rainfall. Public buses connect major cities and are affordable for longer distances. Taxis are available in cities, with both metered services (Marhaba and Mwasalat, which have their own apps) and unmetered orange-white taxis where prices should be negotiated beforehand. For remote areas like deserts and mountains, joining organized tours is recommended for safety and convenience.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Oman is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East with low crime rates. Exercise normal precautions regarding personal belongings. The main safety concerns are related to road safety, flash floods in wadis after rainfall and heat-related issues during summer months.
Health & Medical
7
Medical facilities in major cities are generally good, though they may not meet Western standards in rural areas. Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended. Heat-related illnesses are a risk during summer months and dehydration can occur quickly in Oman's arid climate.
Accessibility
4
Accessibility infrastructure in Oman is developing but limited. Modern facilities in Muscat and major tourist sites offer basic accessibility, but historical sites, wadis and desert areas present significant challenges for those with mobility issues. Advance planning is essential.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Oman is generally not recommended for drinking, though it's usually safe for brushing teeth. Bottled water is widely available and affordable. When traveling to remote areas, carry sufficient water supplies, especially during hot weather.
