Sahara Dunes, Starry Nights

Merzouga stands as a small desert village in southeastern Morocco where sand dunes rise sharply against clear blue skies. The area is home to the nomadic Berber people who have lived here for generations, preserving traditions tied to camel herding and local crafts. Visitors can experience quiet streets lined with earthen buildings, taste traditional meals prepared over open fires and watch sunsets that paint the dunes in warm colors. The pace of life remains slow, allowing space for reflection amid vast desert landscapes.

Why travel to Merzouga?

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing the Sahara, Merzouga is the place. The dunes here are some of the highest and most beautiful in Morocco, glowing orange at sunrise and sunset. Camel treks and overnight stays in Berber camps are the classic experiences, but you can also try sandboarding, 4x4 adventures or just climb a dune for jaw-dropping views. Nights are magical, with clear skies perfect for stargazing and the haunting sound of Berber music by the campfire. A few things to keep in mind: summers are brutally hot (up to 48°C) and even in spring or autumn, nights can get cold. Sandstorms are possible in late spring and early fall and prices for desert tours can vary wildly – shop around and don’t rush into the first offer. The village is small and basic, so don’t expect city comforts, but that’s part of the adventure.
