Why travel to Chefchaouen?
Chefchaouen is a must for anyone who loves unique places and a slower, more authentic side of Morocco. The blue-washed streets are endlessly photogenic and the medina is quieter and less hectic than those in Marrakech or Fez. You can shop for handmade crafts, taste local goat cheese and chat with welcoming locals. The town is also a base for hiking in the Rif Mountains or visiting the stunning Akchour waterfalls nearby. Sunrises and sunsets here are magical – especially from the Spanish Mosque overlooking the city. But there are some things to keep in mind: Chefchaouen is small, so a two- or three-day stay is usually enough. The town is hilly and streets are cobbled and sometimes steep – good walking shoes are a must. It can get very hot in summer and surprisingly cold at night in winter. Transport can be tricky, as there’s no train station and buses or taxis are your main options. While generally very safe, always keep valuables secure and avoid walking alone in secluded areas at night.
