Tuvalu is a small island country in Oceania made up of nine low-lying atolls and reef islands. The land sits just above sea level, with most areas only a few meters from the ocean. Freshwater comes mainly from rain collection and small underground sources. The climate is tropical with warm temperatures year-round and frequent breezes. Local culture centers on fishing, traditional crafts and community life. How to travel to Tuvalu

Reaching Tuvalu requires some planning as it's one of the world's most remote and least visited countries. Funafuti International Airport receives flights twice weekly from Fiji via Fiji Airways, which is the only commercial air service to Tuvalu. The flight from Suva, Fiji takes about 2 hours. Alternatively, occasional cargo ships visit Tuvalu from Fiji, though these are not primarily designed for passengers and schedules are irregular.

Access summary

  • Fly into Funafuti (FUN) from Fiji (Nadi/Suva); taxis to atoll.
  • No land neighbors; only air/sea from Fiji/Kiribati.
  • No local airlines; Fiji Airways via Nadi (oneworld).

Where to stay in Tuvalu

Accommodation in Tuvalu is limited and basic, with only a handful of small hotels and guesthouses primarily on Funafuti. Don't expect luxury resorts or international chain hotels - most places offer simple, clean rooms with basic amenities. Some family-run guesthouses provide a more authentic local experience. Advance booking is essential due to the limited options, especially if your visit coincides with any government events or local celebrations.

How to get around Tuvalu

Getting around Tuvalu is relatively straightforward due to the small size of the islands. On Funafuti, the main island, walking is the primary mode of transportation, though some locals use motorbikes and a limited number of cars. For traveling between islands, small boats and the government passenger ferry are the main options, though schedules can be irregular and dependent on weather conditions.
