Where Presidential History Meets Ranchland

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park preserves the Texas roots of the 36th U.S. president. Visitors explore his birthplace, a modest farmhouse where he grew up on a working ranch. The site includes his childhood home and the Johnson family cemetery overlooking rolling hills. Interpretive trails explain how rural life shaped his values before politics. Ranger-led talks share stories about his early years and public service. The park balances history with open space, letting guests reflect near quiet fields and historic structures without crowds or flashy displays.

The ranch district, known as the 'Texas White House' during Johnson's presidency, lets you drive through a working ranch where Texas Longhorns still graze freely, visit the one-room schoolhouse where young Lyndon learned to read and see the family cemetery where both the President and Lady Bird are buried.

Safety information overview

General safety
5
The park is generally very safe for visitors. The main safety concerns are related to the Texas heat in summer months and the presence of free-ranging longhorn cattle in the ranch area. Drive slowly through the ranch and maintain a safe distance from the animals.
Health & Medical
7
Medical facilities are limited within the park itself. The nearest hospitals are in larger towns some distance away. Heat-related illnesses are the primary health concern during summer months, so staying hydrated and avoiding extended sun exposure is important.
Accessibility
9
The visitor centers and some historical buildings have wheelchair accessibility, but many historical structures have limited accessibility due to their age and original design. The driving tour of the ranch is accessible for those with mobility limitations.
Tap water
10
Tap water is available and safe to drink at the visitor centers and public facilities within the park. During hot summer months, bringing additional water is recommended as the Texas heat can lead to rapid dehydration.
