Rocky Mountain skiing paradise

Keystone is a small mountain town in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. It sits at over 10,000 feet above sea level and sees heavy snow each winter. The area is known for skiing, hiking and scenic drives through forested valleys. Local shops sell gear and snacks while restaurants serve hearty meals to visitors. Summer brings wildflowers along trails and mountain biking routes. Winter turns the landscape white with deep powder. Why travel to Keystone (Colorado)?

Keystone offers a perfect balance of world-class skiing and family-friendly atmosphere. The resort boasts an impressive 3,149 acres of skiable terrain with 130+ trails catering to all skill levels, from gentle beginner slopes like the 3.5-mile Schoolmarm run to challenging expert terrain in the five bowls. What makes it special is that you can actually ski here at night - Keystone offers Colorado's longest ski day with night skiing available from Thanksgiving through mid-March. Beyond skiing, what really surprised me was how much there is to do year-round. In winter, you'll find snow forts, sleigh rides, tubing and ice skating on one of the nation's largest groomed skating ponds. Summer transforms the area into a hiking and mountain biking paradise with chairlifts running to help you access high-altitude trails. Just be aware that at 9,280 feet base elevation, altitude sickness can affect some visitors and the resort area isn't a traditional town with extensive amenities beyond those catering to tourists.

Safety information overview

General safety
5
Keystone is generally very safe with low crime rates. The main safety concerns relate to mountain activities - skiing accidents, altitude sickness and rapidly changing weather conditions. Always check weather forecasts before outdoor activities and follow resort safety guidelines.
Health & Medical
8
Medical facilities in Summit County are good but limited. The nearest hospital is in Frisco, about 15 minutes away. Altitude sickness is common for visitors not acclimated to the high elevation (9,280+ feet). Stay hydrated and consider acclimating in Denver first.
Accessibility
7
Keystone Resort has made efforts to accommodate visitors with disabilities, offering adaptive skiing programs and some accessible lodging options. However, the mountainous terrain naturally presents challenges and some activities and areas may have limited accessibility.
Tap water
10
Tap water in Keystone is safe to drink and of good quality. The high mountain water source provides clean, refreshing water. Staying well-hydrated is essential at high altitude to help prevent altitude sickness symptoms.
