How to travel to Telluride

Getting to Telluride is notoriously challenging, which helps preserve its character but requires planning. The most convenient option is flying into Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), though service is limited to small aircraft and flights are frequently affected by weather. Most visitors fly into Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), about 1.5 hours away by car, which offers more reliable service from major cities. Denver International Airport provides the most flight options but requires a 6+ hour drive. The remote location means driving in can be difficult, especially in winter when mountain passes may be treacherous. Once you've arrived, you won't need a car, so many visitors use shuttle services like Telluride Express from Montrose rather than renting vehicles.

Access summary

  • From Montrose Airport (MTJ): Shuttle or drive to Telluride, about 1.5 hours.
  • From Denver: Flight to Montrose or Telluride, then 10–90 minute transfer.
  • From Grand Junction: Scenic drive via US‑50/550/62/145, roughly 2.5–3 hours.

Where to stay in Telluride

Telluride offers accommodation options that cater to its high-end reputation, with prices to match. Downtown Telluride features historic hotels and Victorian-era buildings converted into charming inns, providing easy access to restaurants and shops. Mountain Village offers more modern, ski-in/ski-out luxury accommodations with amenities like hot tubs and mountain views. Vacation rentals are popular for longer stays or groups. Regardless of location, accommodations tend to be expensive, especially during peak winter ski season and summer festivals. Book well in advance for the best options, particularly if visiting during October when fall colors attract crowds but prices are somewhat lower.

How to get around Telluride

Telluride is remarkably easy to navigate without a car once you've arrived. The historic downtown is just eight blocks wide and twelve blocks long, making it entirely walkable. The crown jewel of local transportation is the free gondola system – the only one of its kind in North America – which connects downtown Telluride with Mountain Village in a scenic 13-minute ride that offers breathtaking views. For getting around town, the free Galloping Goose shuttle bus runs a continuous loop throughout downtown. During seasons when the gondola isn't running, additional free shuttles operate between Telluride and Mountain Village.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Telluride is exceptionally safe with very low crime rates. The main safety concerns are related to outdoor activities and mountain conditions rather than crime. Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms, as the town sits at 8,750 feet above sea level.
Health & Medical
7
Medical facilities in Telluride are limited to a small medical center that handles basic care and emergencies. Serious medical issues require transport to larger facilities in Montrose or Grand Junction. Altitude sickness is common among visitors not accustomed to high elevations.
Accessibility
5
Telluride presents challenges for those with mobility limitations due to its historic nature, steep streets and high elevation. The free gondola is wheelchair accessible, but many outdoor activities and some historic buildings are not. Mountain Village offers better accessibility with more modern infrastructure.
Tap water
7
Tap water in Telluride is safe to drink and comes from pristine mountain sources. The high altitude increases dehydration risk, so visitors should drink more water than usual. Public water fountains are available in town parks and along main streets.
