Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin on 8 September draws pilgrims to the monastery

Founded around the 11th century, Kykkos Monastery is one of Cyprus' wealthiest and most important religious sites. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the monastery houses a legendary icon attributed to Apostle Luke, richly covered in gold and silver and kept in a special shrine. The monastery's architecture and interiors reflect centuries of devotion, with beautiful frescoes, mosaics and ornate decorations.

The monastery's setting offers stunning views of the Marathasa Valley and surrounding Troodos peaks, providing a peaceful atmosphere for contemplation. The complex includes covered terraces housing former cells of monks, a museum showcasing ecclesiastical treasures and workshops preserving religious artifacts.

Visiting the monastery is free, but the museum charges a small entrance fee. The site is active with monks and worshippers, so respectful behavior and quietness are expected, especially inside the chapel. Photography is allowed in most areas except inside the church itself.

Note: The journey to Kykkos involves steep and winding mountain roads that can be challenging for drivers unfamiliar with such terrain. Limited parking is available, so visiting during less busy times is advisable. The monastery's luxurious decorations have drawn mixed opinions, some finding them opulent in contrast to monastic simplicity.
