Best up-and-coming destinations in Europe
Up-and-coming cities and hidden regional hotspots in Europe
Europe's emerging destinations are typically smaller countries and regions that sit outside the continent's most established tourism circuits, where improving transport links and growing regional awareness have begun attracting independent travellers ahead of mainstream recognition. The continent's compact geography means these destinations are often within a short flight or train journey of major hubs, lowering the practical barrier to visiting somewhere less documented and less crowded than the headline cities nearby.
Central and southeastern Europe contain the strongest concentration of emerging options, with several countries developing food, culture and outdoor activity scenes of genuine quality that have not yet attracted the visitor numbers their offer warrants. Secondary cities in otherwise well-visited countries frequently offer the same architectural heritage and cultural depth as the national capitals with considerably more space and lower costs.
Infrastructure in the most emerging destinations is improving quickly but remains less developed than in mature markets, and accommodation quality and transport reliability vary more than in western European equivalents. English language availability is more limited in some emerging markets and basic language preparation is worthwhile. Costs across central and eastern Europe are generally lower than in western equivalents making extended exploration of lesser-known regions practical on modest budgets.
