Rare high-altitude ice caps and permanent permanent mountain snow fields in Africa
Glaciers are very rare in Africa. The last ones are on a few high peaks near the equator, where seeing ice after days of hiking through forest can feel a bit unreal.
Kilimanjaro has icefields you can see on a non-technical summit trek, Mount Kenya has a small, fading glacier below the trekking peak and in the Rwenzori Mountains you will find glacier routes that need crampons and a rope team.
Going soon makes more sense here than almost anywhere else in the world, since this ice is shrinking fast and some glaciers might be gone within twenty years. Local guides know what the ice looks like right now, which has changed a lot in the past decade. Pack warm layers too, as summit nights are often well below freezing.
