Why travel to Ashgabat?

Visiting Ashgabat is like nowhere else: the city holds multiple Guinness World Records for its marble-clad buildings, fountains and the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel. You’ll find lavish monuments to Turkmen pride, such as the Independence Monument and the golden statues of Turkmenbashi. The city’s museums – like the Turkmen Carpet Museum and National Museum of History – are fascinating, if pricey and the leafy old town and Russian Bazaar offer a glimpse of local life away from the grand facades. For panoramic views, take the cable car up to the Kopetdag mountains. But Ashgabat is also a city of contrasts: rules are strict and the political atmosphere can feel stifling. Most visits are only possible on guided tours, though you may have some time to explore on your own. The city can feel empty and artificial and prices for attractions and taxis are higher than elsewhere in Central Asia. Summers are brutally hot and you’ll need to dress for the desert climate and carry plenty of water. Still, if you’re curious about the world’s lesser-seen corners, Ashgabat is a truly unforgettable stop.

Where to stay in Ashgabat

How to get around Ashgabat

Ashgabat is sprawling, so you’ll need taxis or private drivers to get around. Official taxis are best, but many locals use informal 'gypsy cabs'-just flag a car and negotiate a fare. Public transport is limited for visitors. Walking is pleasant in the city center, but distances are long and the heat can be intense. Most hotels and tours can arrange transfers.
