Why travel to Taichung?

Taichung is a must if you love food, art and a laid-back city vibe. It’s famous for bubble tea (try it at Chun Shui Tang), inventive desserts like sun cakes and night markets that buzz with local life. The city is dotted with art installations, from the colorful Rainbow Village to the modern National Taichung Theater. Nature is never far away, with hiking trails in Dakeng, flower markets and the sunset magic of Gaomei Wetlands. Taichung is less crowded and more relaxed than Taipei, but still has plenty going on – just be prepared for some spread-out attractions, occasional air pollution and unpredictable weather (bring an umbrella!).

  • Try bubble tea at Chun Shui Tang’s original Siwei store – Taichung is widely linked to its invention.

How to travel to Taichung

Taichung is easily reached by Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei (about 1 hour) or Kaohsiung. The HSR station is outside the city center, but shuttle buses and taxis connect you quickly. Taichung International Airport serves regional flights. Intercity buses and trains also link Taichung with other major cities and tourist destinations like Sun Moon Lake.

Access summary

  • From Taichung International Airport (RMQ): airport bus or taxi, about 30–45 minutes.
  • From Taipei: high-speed rail to Taichung HSR station, roughly 1–1.5 hours.
  • From Kaohsiung: high-speed rail to Taichung HSR station, usually around 1 hour.

Where to stay in Taichung

Taichung has a wide range of accommodation, from stylish boutique hotels and modern chains to budget hostels. Most visitors stay near the train station or in the West District for easy access to shopping, food and transport. Book ahead for weekends and festivals.

How to get around Taichung

Taichung is spread out, but the city center is walkable for key sights. Buses are frequent and affordable and the iBike system is great for short trips. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are handy for longer distances or reaching outlying attractions. The main train and HSR stations connect you to the rest of Taiwan. Traffic can be heavy at peak times and some attractions (like Rainbow Village or Gaomei Wetlands) require a bus or taxi ride.
