Black Sea beaches and mountain thrills

Sochi stands where mountains meet the sea in Russia’s far south. The city stretches along a narrow strip of land between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, creating a landscape shaped by both water and peaks. Here, snowy slopes rise close to beaches and forests give way to coastal streets. Sochi serves as a gateway for travelers seeking ski runs or seaside relaxation, with local markets selling fresh fish and mountain herbs alongside city cafes. Its location makes it a rare place where different climates and cultures overlap naturally.

Why travel to Sochi?

Sochi is famous for its long pebble beaches, lively boardwalks and lush parks like the Arboretum, but it’s also a gateway to mountain adventures in places like Rosa Khutor. The city’s spa culture, tea plantations and waterfalls offer plenty to explore beyond the sea and Sochi Park brings a family-friendly, fairytale vibe. There’s a vibrant nightlife scene and the city’s subtropical climate means palm trees and blooming flowers most of the year. Downsides? Sochi can get crowded in summer and during holidays and prices rise with demand. English is not widely spoken, so a translation app is handy. Pickpocketing is a risk in busy areas and LGBT travelers should be aware of local laws and attitudes. Public transport is good, but traffic can be heavy and some attractions are spread out along the coast.

  • Do a day trip to Krasnaya Polyana/Rosa Khutor – mountain air and views feel worlds away from the promenade.

How to get around Sochi

Sochi’s attractions stretch along the coast, so use local trains, buses or marshrutkas (minibuses) to get around. The city center and main beaches are walkable, but taxis (Yandex, Uber) are best for late nights or longer distances. Traffic can be heavy in summer and during events. Cycling is popular on the promenade and cable cars connect to mountain resorts.
