Ancient Buddhist university frozen in time

Taxila stands out as a place where ancient history meets everyday life. Located in northern Pakistan, it holds many ruins from civilizations that lived thousands of years ago. The town is close to several archaeological sites, including Buddhist monasteries and old forts built by different rulers over time. Visitors can see artifacts displayed at local museums and walk along paths once traveled by traders on the Silk Road. Taxila’s streets are filled with small shops selling crafts and snacks, making it easy to experience both heritage and daily routines in one visit.

Why travel to Taxila?

Taxila is incredible layered of history - where else can you walk through four distinct ancient cities in one day? The site offers a unique window into how different civilizations built upon each other, from prehistoric settlements to Alexander the Great's triumphant entry and later the flourishing of one of the world's earliest Buddhist universities. The Gandharan art preserved in the museum is particularly special - these sculptures blend Greek artistic techniques with Buddhist themes, creating something truly unique that you won't see anywhere else. What makes Taxila special is how accessible these incredible ruins are, yet how few international tourists you'll encounter. You can explore ancient monasteries, stupas and city layouts at your own pace without crowds. Just be aware that signage can be limited in some areas, so hiring a knowledgeable guide is recommended to fully appreciate what you're seeing. Also, summer temperatures can be quite intense, so timing your visit during spring or autumn will make for a much more comfortable experience.

How to travel to Taxila

Taxila is easily accessible from the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, which are less than 50 km away. The most convenient approach is to travel to Islamabad first, which has an international airport with connections to major cities. From there, you can hire a taxi or join a guided tour for the approximately one-hour drive to Taxila. Pakistan's longest highway N-5, which runs between Karachi and Peshawar, also passes by Taxila, making it accessible from other major Pakistani cities.

Access summary

  • From Islamabad International Airport (ISB): Taxi or car, around 30–45 minutes.
  • From Islamabad city: Drive or taxi via GT Road, roughly 40–60 minutes.
  • From Rawalpindi: Car, taxi or bus along GT Road, about 45–60 minutes.

Where to stay in Taxila

Accommodation options in Taxila itself are limited, with just a few basic guesthouses available. Most visitors choose to base themselves in nearby Islamabad or Rawalpindi, which offer a wide range of hotels from budget to luxury and make day trips to the archaeological sites. This approach gives you access to better amenities while still allowing ample time to explore Taxila's treasures.

How to get around Taxila

Getting around Taxila's archaeological sites requires some planning as they are spread out over several kilometers. Most visitors hire a local taxi for the day to travel between the different ruins, as public transportation between sites is limited. If you're comfortable driving in Pakistan, renting a car is also an option, but having a local guide who knows the locations well is highly recommended regardless of your transportation choice.
