Why travel to Mentawai Islands?
What makes the Mentawai Islands truly special is their dual appeal of exceptional surfing and rich cultural immersion. For surfers, the archipelago offers over 50 recognized quality breaks, including world-renowned spots like Hollow Trees, Macaronis, Rifles and Green Bush. The consistent swells from the Indian Ocean create perfect waves that break over coral reefs, providing an experience that's hard to match anywhere else in the world. The islands' remote location also means you can often find uncrowded breaks, especially during shoulder seasons. Beyond surfing, the Mentawai Islands offer a genuine opportunity to step away from the typical tourist trail and experience a less commercialized side of Indonesia. The indigenous Mentawai people maintain traditional lifestyles in the jungle, particularly on Siberut Island, where cultural tours allow visitors to live with tribe members and learn about their unique customs. The islands also boast pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs. Just be prepared for the remoteness - getting here requires some effort, facilities are basic in many areas and during rainy season (December-March), heavy downpours can limit activities and some resorts close entirely.

How to travel to Mentawai Islands
The gateway to the Mentawai Islands is Padang (PDG) on the west coast of Sumatra. Direct flights to Padang are available from Indonesian cities including Bali, Jakarta, Medan, Bandung and Surabaya, as well as from Kuala Lumpur. From Padang, there are three main options to reach the islands: 1. Mentawai Fast Ferry: The most common option for independent travelers, connecting Padang with the three main islands. Ferries don't operate daily, so check their schedule on their Instagram profile or with your accommodation in Padang beforehand. 2. Organized Boat Charters: Popular with surfers, these typically arrange transfers from Padang airport to the harbor. 3. Seaplane: A faster but more expensive option. Note that ferry services can be cancelled due to bad weather, so it's advisable to build flexibility into your schedule and avoid booking flights on the same day as your planned return from the islands.
Access summary
- From Minangkabau Airport (PDG): Taxi or train to Padang, about 30–40 minutes.
- From Padang city: Mentawai Fast Ferry to main islands, usually 3–6 hours.
- Overnight slow ferries also run Padang–Mentawai, typically 10–12 hours crossing.
Where to stay in Mentawai Islands
Accommodation in the Mentawai Islands ranges from basic homestays to luxury surf resorts, with options varying significantly between islands. Tuapejat offers the best tourism infrastructure, though still quite basic by international standards. Surf-focused visitors can choose between land-based resorts like Awera Resort or Kandui Resort, which offer comfortable amenities and easy access to breaks or boat charters that allow you to sleep aboard while visiting multiple surf spots. For those interested in cultural experiences on Siberut Island, accommodations are very basic, often arranged through tour companies like Mentawai Tribe Company. During peak season (June-September), prices increase significantly and advance booking is essential.
