Nanki–Shirahama Airport opened in 1968 and is located about 1.5 km southeast of Shirahama town center, situated on hilly terrain with easy access to some of the southern Kii Peninsula’s top attractions. The airport’s runway was extended in the 1990s to accommodate jet aircraft, improving connectivity with Tokyo.

The airport is relatively small, with a simple passenger terminal building but offers practical amenities including cafes, shops selling Wakayama famous ‘ki ncho manju’ sweets and rental car services. The observation area offers pleasant views of the surrounding hills and runways.

A caution for travelers is that although the airport serves as a direct link to Tokyo, flights to Osaka and Nagoya were discontinued due to competition with nearby Kansai International Airport, meaning some travelers must connect through Tokyo or other hubs. Public transport options from the airport are limited, but bus services connect to local train stations and Shirahama Onsen.

Despite these limitations, Nanki–Shirahama Airport offers an efficient and picturesque entry point to southern Wakayama’s natural highlights, hot springs and adventure parks, including the famous Adventure World with panda exhibits.

How to get from Shirahama Airport to popular destinations

To Shirahama Town Center:
Shirahama town is just a short bus or taxi ride from the airport, about 15 minutes. The Meiko Bus operates a direct hourly service to the Shirahama train station and Onsen area, with fares around JP¥610 (£2.89). Taxi rides are faster but significantly costlier.

To Kii-Katsuura:
Bus connections link the airport area with Kii‑Katsuura, a fishing town famous for fresh seafood. Journey takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and buses are less frequent, so scheduling is important.

To Kumano:
For access to the Kumano region, buses connect through Shingu Station from Shirahama, requiring some travel planning but offering access to the UNESCO‑listed pilgrimage trails.
