- 🏰 Take a guided tour through the royal residence rooms
- 👑 See the throne room and grand koa wood staircase
- 🗝️ Explore exhibits on Hawaiian monarchy and royal relics
Completed in 1882 by King Kalākaua, the 'Merrie Monarch,' Iolani Palace was the heart of Hawaiian royalty and governance. It was designed with influences from European architecture but uniquely Hawaiian in its cultural significance. The palace was the residence for the last monarchs of Hawaii, King Kalākaua and Queen Liliuokalani, until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
The interior is richly furnished with restored original pieces and replicas, including a grand koa wood staircase, elegant throne room and private royal suites. The Music Room and library reveal facets of royal life. The Imprisonment Room holds rare significance where Queen Liliuokalani was held for eight months following the coup.
After serving various governmental purposes, the palace underwent meticulous restoration starting in the 1960s and now operates as a museum offering both self-guided audio tours and docent-led experiences. Visitors can explore the palace's halls and basement gallery showcasing royal artifacts and photographs.
While stunning, visitors should be aware that tours have scheduled times and the palace can get busy, especially during holiday events. It’s advisable to book ahead for guided tours. As an indoor historic site, it’s less suited for very young children or strollers and visitors should respect the solemn history represented here.
Knowledge before you go
