Why travel to San José?

San José is more than just a gateway to Costa Rica’s rainforests and beaches-it’s a destination in its own right for travelers who love history, art and authentic local life. Stroll through vibrant neighborhoods like Barrio Amón and Barrio Escalante, visit world-class museums (the National Museum and Jade Museum are musts) and sample Costa Rican coffee and street food in bustling markets. The city’s parks and plazas are perfect for people-watching and there’s always something happening, from outdoor concerts to art exhibitions. Just be aware: San José can feel hectic, especially downtown and petty theft does occur – use common sense, avoid walking alone at night and keep valuables secure. The city’s charm is best discovered on foot or with a local guide, but don’t expect postcard-perfect scenery everywhere; some areas are gritty, but that’s part of its realness.
