Best yoga destinations in South America

Secluded rainforest clearings and high mountain valleys in South America

High-altitude Andean valleys combine yoga practice with serious altitude and centuries of indigenous spiritual tradition, while warmer coastlines further east offer a beach-oriented version of the same broader wellness movement spreading across the continent.

The destinations on this list range from high-altitude retreat centres, where acclimatisation matters as much as the practice itself, to coastal retreats built around ocean views and considerably easier logistics. Some incorporate local plant medicine traditions. Others stay focused purely on physical practice.

Allowing time to acclimatise before intensive practice matters significantly at the higher-altitude retreats, where altitude sickness can otherwise disrupt an entire stay. Many retreats also build in rest days between sessions. Packing warm layers also matters considerably given the temperature swings common at altitude.
