Best wine destinations in Asia

Terraced mountain vineyards and boutique wineries across Asia

Asia's wine regions are younger than those of the western world but several have developed with striking speed, producing wines that have drawn serious international attention within a relatively short period. High-altitude vineyards in the continent's interior and cooler-climate regions along eastern coastlines have proved the most technically successful, with elevation compensating for latitude in ways that continue to surprise observers. The wine culture around consumption is deeply established across parts of the continent regardless of local production.

The most developed wine tourism infrastructure is concentrated in East Asia, where dedicated visitor facilities, guided tastings and vineyard accommodation have expanded rapidly alongside growing domestic interest. Elsewhere, visiting producers requires more independent planning but often delivers more direct access to winemakers and a less commercialised experience than in established western regions.

Language barriers can complicate independent cellar door visits in some countries and organised tours are a practical solution in less internationally orientated regions. Seasonal timing matters more than in temperate climates, with extreme summer heat affecting both visiting comfort and harvest schedules. Your money goes a long way at most destinations, making extended wine itineraries accessible even when covering significant distances between regions.

Georgia
Wine country, mountain villages and old Tbilisi
Georgia has made wine for about 8,000 years and stores it in clay vessels called qvevri. Winemakers bury these large jars in the ground to ferment and age the wine. UNESCO recognised this tradition in 2013. Visitors can taste amber wines in the Kakheti region below the Caucasus Mountains.

Mountain monasteries, wine and a pink capital
The Areni 1 cave in Armenia holds what many archaeologists consider the oldest known winery. Researchers found a wine press and fermenting vats about 6,100 years old. The local Areni grape still grows in the nearby Vayots Dzor valley. Visitors can taste wines among red cliffs and old monasteries.

Hokkaido
Volcanoes, powder snow and fresh seafood

Vibrant landscapes and ancient cultural crossroads
Cizhong in Yunnan is a Tibetan village with vineyards planted around a Catholic church built in 1867. French missionaries brought the Rose Honey grape here. The vines grow at high altitude beside the Mekong River. Visitors can taste wines in family homes among mountain views.
