Best LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Oceania

Inclusive urban quarters and progressive seaside communities in Oceania

Oceania is home to two of the most established LGBTQ+ friendly countries anywhere, alongside a much wider range of conditions across the Pacific.

Australia has strong legal protections and marriage equality since 2017, with Sydney's Mardi Gras standing as one of the largest Pride events in the world. New Zealand offers a similarly welcoming environment, with marriage equality in place since 2013 and a strong, visible community in cities like Auckland and Wellington. Conditions vary a lot more across the wider Pacific islands, where some countries still maintain laws from the colonial era that criminalize same sex relationships, so research before travel matters here too. Sticking to Australia and New Zealand offers the most consistently welcoming experience in the region, especially for travelers planning a first visit.

The destinations on our list for Oceania reflect that same focus on the region's two most established, welcoming countries.
