Best LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Africa

Inclusive urban neighborhoods and welcoming community spaces in Africa

Africa offers one clear standout for LGBTQ+ travelers, alongside a wide range of legal and social conditions elsewhere on the continent.

South Africa remains the continent's most established hub, with constitutional protections against discrimination and marriage equality in place since 2006. Cape Town in particular has a long standing gay village around De Waterkant and hosts its own Pride celebrations each year. Legal protections and social attitudes vary widely elsewhere on the continent, with some countries maintaining laws that criminalize same sex relationships, so research before travel matters a great deal here. Sticking to well established, welcoming hubs makes for a far more relaxed trip. Local LGBTQ+ organizations are also a useful resource for current, on the ground information before booking.

The destinations on our list for Africa reflect that same focus, centered on the continent's most established and welcoming hub.
