Top digital nomad destinations and remote work hubs in Africa

Africa is not always the first continent people think of for remote work, but a growing number of cities are proving that it deserves a place on the list.

Coastal towns with a slower pace suit people who want long stretches of focused work broken up by ocean air and cheap, fresh food. Bigger cities offer a different kind of pull, with coworking spaces, faster internet, and a growing community of other remote workers to meet after hours. Costs remain low compared to many popular hubs elsewhere, which lets a modest budget stretch much further. Power and internet reliability can vary block by block, so a bit of research before booking really pays off.

The destinations on our list for Africa combine established remote work hubs with newer spots just starting to build a scene. Patience with the occasional hiccup tends to be repaid with a much lower cost of living.

City in South Africa
Cape Town
Mountains, Beaches and a Vibrant Culture
Around 3,100 hours of sunshine a year suit a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Table Mountain rises 1,113 metres above the city and offers a daily reset between work sessions. South African Standard Time, UTC+2, overlaps neatly with European working hours. The local tech sector grew about 8 percent a year in 2025.
City in Ghana
Accra
Vibrant Culture and Coastal Charm
In 1877 the city replaced Cape Coast as capital of the British Gold Coast. Jamestown and Osu grew from old forts along the shore. UNESCO named it World Book Capital for 2023. The airport lies just 9.7 kilometres from downtown, which makes arrival and weekend trips easy.
Country
Cape Verde
Islands of eternal summer
Ten volcanic islands scatter across the Atlantic roughly 570 kilometres off West Africa. Portuguese is official. Kriolu is the mother tongue of nearly everyone. Cidade Velha on Santiago was founded in 1462. The country keeps UTC−1, so mornings start late for people used to European clocks.
Town in Egypt
Dahab
Bohemian Vibes on the Red Sea
Sea temperatures here run from about 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit through the year. Windsurfers and divers fill this small town on the southeast coast of Sinai. It lies about 80 kilometres northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh. The Egyptian Arabic name means gold. A laid-back pace suits long stays.
City in Rwanda
Kigali
Vibrant capital blending tradition and modernity
At about 1,567 metres, the city is nearly as high as Denver. Rolling hills carry neighbourhoods across ridges and valleys. Kigali has been ranked the cleanest city in Africa in recent years. The Kigali Convention Centre has hosted African Union and African Development Bank meetings, so business infrastructure is strong.
City in Morocco
Marrakech
A vibrant maze of colors and spices
Jemaa el-Fnaa, the central square of the UNESCO-listed medina, is a hub for trade and performance. The Almoravids founded the city around 1070. Gueliz, the newer district outside the walls, offers galleries and cinemas for breaks from work. Traditional riads with quiet courtyards make comfortable bases.
Country
Mauritius
Tropical Bliss in the Indian Ocean
In 2022 the island expanded its premium visa to digital nomads, allowing stays of up to one year. English and French are used officially, while Creole is spoken at home by about 90 percent of people. The World Bank classifies the country as high income. Time runs on UTC+4.
City in Kenya
Nairobi
Where urban life meets wild adventures
Kenya's capital belongs to the region nicknamed Silicon Savannah. Konza Technopolis, a smart city project under Vision 2030, is being built about 64 kilometres to the south. Construction began with a ceremony in January 2013. Phase 1 roads, water, power and telecom infrastructure was completed in 2022.
