Why travel to Kawagoe?
Most people come for Kurazukuri Street. Kurazukuri are merchant buildings with wooden frames and thick clay walls. For a few hundred metres they stand on both sides of the street. Most now hold shops, restaurants and cafes. The Toki no Kane bell tower is the district's landmark and rings four times a day. Kashiya Yokocho is a narrow lane right beside the warehouse district with around 20 old shops selling traditional candy. Kita-in Temple is about a 10-minute walk away and holds palace buildings from the former Edo Castle along with more than 500 stone rakan statues, each with a different face. The Honmaru Goten, the last surviving part of Kawagoe Castle, is a short walk from there. Taisho Roman Street, a strip of older shopfronts between Hon-Kawagoe Station and the warehouse district, makes a good route in. In October the Kawagoe Festival takes over the centre on the third Saturday and Sunday. Floats about 8 m tall roll through the streets and pairs of them stage musical battles when they meet. On Saturday evening the streets are lit with lanterns. The festival is registered with UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage and a festival museum in town shows real floats the rest of the year. Kawagoe suits a day trip and fits well with a morning in Tokyo. The old town is busiest at weekends so a weekday visit is quieter.

How to travel to Kawagoe
Trains are the easiest way to reach Kawagoe, with three lines from Tokyo. The Tobu Tojo Line express runs from Ikebukuro to Kawagoe Station or Kawagoeshi Station in about 30 minutes. The Seibu Shinjuku Line runs from Seibu-Shinjuku to Hon-Kawagoe in about 45 minutes by limited express and 50 to 60 minutes by express. The JR Saikyo and Kawagoe Line runs from Shinjuku to Kawagoe Station in about 55 minutes. From Omiya, the JR line takes about 17 minutes to Kawagoe, which suits Shinkansen arrivals. Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) are reached via Tokyo. Direct airport limousine buses also serve Kawagoe so check the current schedule. By road, the Kan-Etsu Expressway has an interchange at Kawagoe, but the old town has little parking and narrow streets.
Access summary
- From Narita/Haneda: Airport limobus or trains via central Tokyo, 1.5–2 hours.
- From Tokyo (Ikebukuro/Shinjuku): Tobu Tojo or Seibu lines, about 30–60 minutes.
- From Omiya: JR Kawagoe Line direct to Kawagoe Station, roughly 20–25 minutes.
Where to stay in Kawagoe
Most visitors treat Kawagoe as a day trip from Tokyo, so lodging in town is limited to a handful of hotels near Kawagoe Station and Hon-Kawagoe Station. Staying near Hon-Kawagoe is closest to the old town and Seibu line, while Kawagoe Station suits the JR and Tobu lines. A day-use hot spring facility in town stays open late and makes a relaxed end to an evening. Omiya, about 17 minutes away on the JR line, has many more hotels at different price levels. Tokyo itself is 30 to 55 minutes away depending on the line, so Ikebukuro or Shinjuku also work as a base. Rooms in Kawagoe fill up around the Kawagoe Festival on the third weekend of October, so book early for those dates.

How to get around Kawagoe
The old town is best covered on foot, with buses for the longer gaps.
On foot:
Kurazukuri Street is about 1.5 km north of Kawagoe Station, which is roughly a 25-minute walk. Hon-Kawagoe Station on the Seibu line is closer to the sights. Cars and pedestrians share the narrow streets around the warehouse district.
Buses:
Buses leave from the east exit of Kawagoe Station for stops such as Ichibangai, Kita-in Temple-mae and the museums area, with short walks of 1 to 5 minutes from each. A Tobu bus to Nakamachi takes about 10 minutes. Loop buses also go around the main sights.
Information and cars:
Tobu sells a one-day Kawagoe Discount Pass to foreign visitors that covers Tobu buses in the city. The Kawagoe Tourist Information Office at Kawagoe Station can help with maps and bus stops. A car isn't needed here since the compact old town is easier on foot or by bus.
Food in Kawagoe
Food in Kawagoe centres on sweet potato and old-style sweets, with eel restaurants and noodle shops alongside them. Cafes fill the old storehouses along Kurazukuri Street.
Sweet potato:
Violet-fleshed varieties are especially popular and appear as fried sticks, ice cream, steamed buns, baked snacks shaped like rice balls and even local beer. They're a safe choice for vegetarians.
Traditional sweets:
Kashiya Yokocho sells traditional candy and snacks, including fugashi, a long sweet made from wheat gluten and brown sugar. It's an easy snack to eat while walking the old streets.
Eel:
Long-established eel restaurants are a local tradition. Eel and many other dishes are fish based, so vegetarians should ask before ordering.
Soba and udon shops serve quick lunches and some close mid-afternoon, so lunch is easier before 14:00. The shopping streets between the two stations hold chain restaurants and ramen shops if you want something quick.
