Why travel to Echigo Yuzawa?
Echigo-Yuzawa has about a dozen ski areas and the Joetsu Shinkansen reaches the station in around 80 minutes, which puts real snow within easy reach of Tokyo. Gala Yuzawa has its own Shinkansen station in winter with the gondola right beside it. Yuzawa Kogen is gentler and suits families and beginners while Ishiuchi Maruyama is known for powder and long runs. Kagura and Naeba are linked by the Dragondola while Joetsu Kokusai is one of the larger resorts in Japan. Winter nights bring fireworks at some of the resorts. Hot springs and sake are the other half of the trip. Five public bathhouses and many ryokan baths use water that varies from spring to spring. Some outdoor baths look out over snowy mountains. Inside the station, Ponshukan lets you sample sake from over 100 Niigata breweries and has a sake spa. A museum near the station covers local life and the world of the novel Snow Country. Summer works too. The Fuji Rock Festival runs every July at Naeba and Alp-no-Sato botanical park is reached by ropeway. Daigenta Canyon is the spot for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. A single day is enough for a ski trip from Tokyo. Two nights allow skiing plus a long onsen evening and a sake tasting.

How to travel to Echigo Yuzawa
The Joetsu Shinkansen is the easiest way to reach Echigo-Yuzawa and it takes about 80 minutes from Tokyo or Ueno. The route is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Tokyo Wide Pass. From Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT) airports expect roughly two and a half to three hours by train including a change in central Tokyo. In winter some Shinkansen stop at Gala Yuzawa Station in the morning and evening. From Niigata City the Shinkansen takes around an hour and Niigata Airport (KIJ) is the nearest regional airport. By car the drive from Tokyo takes about two hours on the Kan-Etsu Expressway to Yuzawa Interchange and longer in winter traffic. Chains or snow tyres are needed in the ski season and heavy snow can slow the highway. The train avoids the risk and arrives in the middle of town.
Access summary
- From Niigata Airport (KIJ): Bus to Niigata, Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa.
- From Tokyo: Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Echigo-Yuzawa, about 75–90 minutes.

Where to stay in Echigo Yuzawa
The main areas to stay in are the onsen village near Echigo-Yuzawa Station and the ski resorts themselves. Around the station you'll find ryokan, business hotels and small inns, many with their own baths. The resorts have ski hotels right at the lifts and Naeba has several large ski hotels. Staying near the station gives you restaurants and sake tastings in the evening. Staying at a resort puts you at the lifts for the first chair. Some hotels and ryokan allow day visitors into their baths during set hours if you stay elsewhere. Book early for winter weekends, the holiday weeks and the Fuji Rock Festival in July. If everything is full, Tokyo works as a base for a day trip because the Shinkansen takes about 80 minutes.

How to get around Echigo Yuzawa
Echigo-Yuzawa Station is the hub for everything. The station area is walkable and has Ponshukan, with the Yukigunikan museum nearby. Beyond that you rely on shuttle buses in winter and regular buses or taxis in other seasons. Gala Yuzawa can be reached by a shuttle train from the station or directly by some Shinkansen.
Shuttle buses:
In the ski season free shuttle buses run from the station to Ishiuchi Maruyama in about 10 minutes and to Yuzawa Kogen in a couple of minutes. Buses reach Kagura in around 25 minutes, Naeba in about 50 minutes and Joetsu Kokusai in about 25 minutes. Check each resort's timetable since frequency drops late in the day.
Car and taxis:
In summer a car is much more useful for Alp-no-Sato and Daigenta Canyon, where public transport is thin. In winter the Kan-Etsu Expressway is the way in by car and you will need snow tyres or chains. Taxis add up in cost but save time on a short trip.
Food in Echigo Yuzawa
Food in Echigo-Yuzawa follows Niigata Prefecture's cooking, built around rice and sake. Niigata is known for the quality of its rice and the station sells large rice balls called bakudan onigiri. Hegi soba, buckwheat noodles served on a wooden tray, is a regional speciality. Tare katsudon, pork cutlet in a sweet soy sauce over rice, is another Niigata dish.
Sake is the drink to try. Many ryokan serve multi-course dinners with local fish and sake and the ski resorts have food courts and restaurants at the base.
Outside peak weekends many restaurants in town close early so the convenience stores and station shops are handy for quick meals. Vegetarians may find few choices at ryokan dinners and in soba shops, where dashi is common.
