Ancient ruins in boulder landscapes

Hampi stands as a historical village in southern India where ancient stone ruins rise among lush green fields and rocky outcrops. The site preserves the remains of a once-thriving empire, with temples and palaces carved from granite. Local markets sell handmade crafts while small riverside cafes provide quiet spots to watch sunlight dance on water. Visitors can walk through centuries-old pathways, see intricate carvings still visible after hundreds of years and learn about the region’s past from friendly residents who share stories passed down over generations.

Why travel to Hampi?

Hampi offers a rare opportunity to wander through an entire ancient city that has survived nearly 700 years of history, with its grand buildings, temples and palaces remarkably preserved. Unlike many historical sites that offer glimpses of isolated monuments, Hampi presents a complete civilization frozen in time, allowing you to immerse yourself in the daily life and grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire. The iconic stone chariot at Vittala Temple, musical pillars that produce different notes when tapped and the still-functioning Virupaksha Temple with its 52-meter-high gopuram create an archaeological playground that rivals Cambodia's Angkor Wat in scale and preservation. Beyond its historical significance, Hampi's natural setting is equally captivating. The landscape is defined by massive granite boulders improbably balanced atop one another, creating a surreal backdrop for the ruins and establishing Hampi as India's premier bouldering destination. The area divides into two distinct experiences: the 'temple side' with major archaeological sites and the more laid-back 'hippie side' across the Tungabhadra River, where travelers can enjoy riverside cafes and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, visitors should be prepared for the challenging climate, as temperatures can be sweltering outside the October-March window and the remote location means limited medical facilities and basic infrastructure in some areas.

How to travel to Hampi

Hampi is well-connected by road from major cities in South India. The nearest town with good connectivity is Hospet, located about 12km away. Most visitors arrive by overnight sleeper buses from Bangalore (350km, 6-8 hours), Hyderabad, Mysore or Chennai. These buses typically arrive in Hospet early morning, from where auto-rickshaws or the local bus can take you to Hampi. For those preferring rail travel, Hospet Junction is the nearest railway station with connections to major cities. The nearest airports are in Bellary (60km) and Hubli (143km), though they offer limited flights. Most international travelers fly into Bangalore or Hyderabad and continue by bus or train.

Access summary

  • From Hubli Airport (HBX): 4–4.5 hour taxi or private car.
  • From Bengaluru: Overnight train or bus to Hosapete, then 30–40 min rickshaw.
  • From Goa: 7–9 hour overnight bus or train via Hosapete, then rickshaw.

Where to stay in Hampi

Hampi offers two distinct areas for accommodation: the temple side near Virupaksha Temple and the more relaxed 'hippie side' across the river. The temple side provides budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels close to the main archaeological sites, while the hippie side features laid-back guesthouses with river views and a more bohemian atmosphere. Most accommodations are basic but clean, with a few upscale options emerging in recent years. Gopi Guest House, Mowgli Guest House and Shanthi Guest House are popular choices. During peak season (October-March) and especially during the Hampi Utsav in January, advance booking is essential as options are limited.

How to get around Hampi

Exploring Hampi is best done by bicycle or on foot, with bicycle rentals available for ₹100 – 200 (£0.79 – 1.58) per day. The main attractions on the temple side are within walking or cycling distance of each other. To cross between the temple side and the hippie side, coracle boats provide a charming transportation option across the Tungabhadra River. For longer distances or to reach outlying sites, auto-rickshaws are readily available for hire. There's also a public bus that runs between Hospet town and Hampi, dropping passengers right outside Virupaksha Temple, though the frequency can be unpredictable.
