Montenegro Airports
Montenegro, a stunning destination on the Adriatic coast, is served by two main international airports that provide essential gateways into this compact yet remarkably diverse country. With a steadily growing tourism sector and an increasing number of international visitors, the country's airports play a crucial role in connectivity. The two major airports – Podgorica Airport and Tivat Airport – are strategically located to serve different parts of Montenegro efficiently. Podgorica Airport is situated near the capital city, offering access to the country's interior, while Tivat Airport is closer to the scenic coastal region, popular with tourists. These airports accommodate a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers, ensuring a broad range of flight options for travelers from across Europe and beyond. Additionally, nearby international airports in neighboring countries are sometimes used due to their proximity to Montenegrin destinations.
Podgorica Airport, located just 7 kilometers south of the capital city, is Montenegro’s primary airport for business and domestic travel. Also known as Golubovci Airport due to its proximity to the town of Golubovci, it handles around one million passengers annually. The airport links the capital and central regions with flights operated by Air Montenegro – the national carrier – as well as Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and Air Serbia. Destinations include major European hubs such as Istanbul, Vienna, Rome and Belgrade. The airport also provides quick access to interior cities such as Nikšić, Cetinje and Danilovgrad, with easy road and local train connections to various Montenegrin towns.
Tivat Airport, located near the coastal town of Tivat, serves the popular Adriatic coast and is Montenegro’s busiest airport for seasonal travelers. Although the city itself is small, the airport serves as the gateway to renowned tourist destinations including Budva, Kotor and Herceg Novi. Tivat sees a heavy influx of tourists during the summer months thanks to numerous seasonal international flights from low-cost carriers like Ryanair, Wizz Air and EasyJet, as well as airlines such as Swiss and Aegean Airlines. Year-round flights also connect Tivat to Belgrade and Moscow, maintaining vital links during the off-season.
Travelers to Montenegro sometimes opt for Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia due to its proximity to the Montenegrin border, especially for coastal destinations. Situated about 30 kilometers from Herceg Novi, Dubrovnik Airport often provides better connectivity and more frequent flights to a broader range of international destinations, although border crossing delays in summer require planning. Both Podgorica and Tivat airports provide taxi and pre-booked transfer services as public transport options remain limited, ensuring convenient onward travel to hotels and tourist sites. Montenegro’s airports continue to evolve, with infrastructure investments aiming to accommodate growing tourism and improve passenger experiences.
