Why travel to San Diego?

There's something magical about starting your morning with a surf session at Pacific Beach, spending the afternoon exploring Balboa Park's museums and ending the day with craft beers in North Park or a sunset dinner in La Jolla. The city has this wonderful, unpretentious quality – it's beautiful without being showy, cultured without being stuffy and diverse without feeling fragmented. What makes San Diego truly special is its microclimates and neighborhoods, each with distinct personalities. You can experience the historic charm of Old Town with its Mexican heritage, the hipster vibe of North Park with its breweries and coffee shops, the upscale coastal elegance of La Jolla or the beachy atmosphere of Ocean Beach – all within a 20-minute drive. Just be aware that while public transportation exists, it's not comprehensive, so renting a car is almost essential to fully experience the city. Also, accommodation and dining can be quite expensive, especially in popular coastal areas and during summer the beaches can get crowded and some areas experience 'May Gray' and 'June Gloom' – morning fog that sometimes lingers until afternoon.

  • Dedicate a full day to Balboa Park; museums, gardens and the zoo easily fill it.
  • Catch sunset at Sunset Cliffs, but arrive early for parking and cliffside spots.
  • For a quieter beach vibe, choose Ocean Beach over Mission Beach, then browse Newport Avenue eateries.

How to travel to San Diego

San Diego International Airport (SAN), located just minutes from downtown, serves as the main gateway with numerous domestic and international flights. From the airport, taxis, ride-shares and some shuttle services are available to reach your destination. The MTS Bus Route 992 connects the airport with downtown. For those driving, Interstate 5 runs north-south through the city, connecting San Diego with Los Angeles (2-3 hours depending on traffic) and the Mexican border. Interstate 8 provides east-west access. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner train offers a scenic route connecting San Diego with Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Greyhound and FlixBus operate long-distance bus services to San Diego from various U.S. cities. For international visitors, the Cross Border Xpress provides a convenient bridge connecting San Diego directly to the Tijuana International Airport.

Access summary

  • From San Diego Airport (SAN): City bus, shuttle or taxi, about 10–25 minutes.
  • From Los Angeles: Drive I‑5 south or take Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, 2–3 hours.
  • From Tijuana, Mexico: Cross border then trolley/bus or drive, usually 1–2 hours.

Where to stay in San Diego

San Diego offers diverse accommodation options across its many neighborhoods, each with a distinct character. Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter provides urban energy with high-rise hotels and easy access to nightlife. Mission Bay and Pacific Beach offer mid-range beachfront resorts ideal for families. La Jolla features upscale coastal accommodations with stunning ocean views. Old Town and Mission Valley provide more affordable options with good access to attractions. For a unique experience, consider historic hotels in Coronado or boutique properties in Little Italy. During summer, Comic-Con and major conventions, prices surge and availability becomes limited, so booking well in advance is essential.

How to get around San Diego

San Diego is a sprawling city where having a car provides the most flexibility for exploring its diverse neighborhoods and attractions. Rental cars are widely available, though parking in popular areas can be expensive. For those preferring public transportation, the Metropolitan Transit System operates buses and trolleys (light rail) that connect major attractions and neighborhoods, though service can be limited in some areas and infrequent during evenings. The San Diego Trolley is particularly useful for tourists, with the Green Line connecting downtown with Old Town and Mission Valley, the Blue Line serving the border and South Bay and the Orange Line connecting eastern suburbs. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are ubiquitous and often more convenient than public transit for reaching beaches and outlying attractions.
