Most famous theater destinations in South America

Historic grand opera houses and prominent national performance halls in South America

One opera house in South America is widely considered among the finest acoustically anywhere in the world, built over a century ago and still hosting a full international season. Its scale and history reflect the continent's deep operatic and classical music tradition.

The destinations on this list range from grand nineteenth-century opera houses with extraordinary acoustic design to smaller contemporary venues built more recently around local theatre and dance. Both sit within a continent with a genuinely serious classical performance tradition.

Booking a guided tour during the day is worth doing, since access to the full architectural detail is more limited during evening performances. Daytime tours tend to reveal detail that's harder to appreciate at night. Dressing smartly also remains expected at several of the more formal evening performances.
