Africa's best beach destinations and coastal escapes

Pristine coastal escapes and beach spots in Africa

Africa's coastline runs for over 26,000 kilometres and touches two oceans, which gives it a range that most people underestimate. The Indian Ocean side is warm, calm and fringed with coral in places. The Atlantic side is colder, wilder and tends toward long empty stretches backed by dunes or forest. Both have their own appeal and attract different kinds of visitors.

Beach tourism in Africa is less developed than in Southeast Asia or the Caribbean, which cuts both ways. Fewer facilities and harder logistics on one hand, less crowding and more stretches of coast that feel genuinely undiscovered on the other. Some of the best beaches here require real effort to reach, and that effort tends to filter out the crowds.

The Indian Ocean islands sit apart from the continental coast but belong in any serious account of African beaches. Mauritius, the Seychelles, Zanzibar and the Mozambique archipelago each have their own character, and together they cover most of what people are looking for when they imagine an ideal tropical beach.

Pristine beaches meet vibrant culture
The Bazaruto Archipelago spreads five dune islands across turquoise water off Vilanculos. Traditional dhows still carry visitors between islands under billowing cloth sails. Snorkellers can spot dugongs and sea turtles in the surrounding reefs. Climbing the tall dunes on Bazaruto Island rewards hikers with sweeping views of the chain.

Mahé
Tropical Paradise with a Wild Side
Beau Vallon is Mahe's longest beach, stretching nearly three kilometres along the island's northwest coast. Its calm, shallow water makes it a favourite for swimming and evening walks. Fishermen still haul in their catch on the sand most mornings. Restaurants and beach bars line the shore for sunset drinks.

Equatorial paradise with volcanic landscapes
Praia das Sete Ondas earns its name from the rows of waves rolling in one after another. The long grey sand beach stays shallow enough for beginner surfers and kids. Nearby, Boca do Inferno sends seawater shooting through a blowhole in the cliffs. Cocoa plantations line the coastal road just inland from the shore.

La Digue
Secluded island with dream beaches
Anse Source d'Argent is framed by massive pink granite boulders sculpted by centuries of erosion. The shallow lagoon stays calm enough for swimming even when the wind picks up. Photographers wait for late afternoon light, when the granite glows almost orange. A short walk south leads through the boulders to a quieter stretch of sand.

Unique biodiversity meets diverse landscapes
Andilana Beach on Nosy Be curves in a perfect arc of white sand and turquoise water. Sea turtles are a common sight for snorkellers just offshore. From October to December, whale sharks pass close enough to swim alongside. Ylang-ylang plantations scent the air a short walk inland from the shore.

Mountains, Beaches and a Vibrant Culture
A colony of African penguins has nested among the granite boulders of Boulders Beach since 1982. Wooden boardwalks let visitors approach within a few metres without disturbing them. Swimmers can share the sheltered, warm waters of False Bay with the birds. Simon's Town sits a short drive from the beach for lunch afterwards.

Tropical Bliss in the Indian Ocean
Off Le Morne Brabant, shifting sand and silt create the illusion of an underwater waterfall. The effect is visible only from above, as currents pull sediment over the shelf's edge. Helicopter tours give the clearest view of the phenomenon. Climbers who reach the summit of Le Morne can spot it too.

Zanzibar
Turquoise Waters and Spice Perfume
Seaweed farmers still wade into the shallows off Zanzibar's east coast at low tide. Their handwoven rows of rope and buoys stretch out towards the horizon. Visitors can wander Nungwi's white sand beaches and swim in the warm Indian Ocean. Stone Town's spice markets sit a short drive south along the coast.
