Best winter illumination destinations in Oceania

Waterfront light trail designs and urban winter exhibitions in Oceania

One major harbour city turns the Southern Hemisphere winter into one of the region's biggest events, projecting large-scale light installations across its most iconic buildings each year. Smaller city light trails in neighbouring countries offer a quieter, more local alternative.

The destinations on this list range from major harbourside light festivals with significant international programming to smaller city light trails built around local parks and streets. Both run during the region's actual winter, opposite to the Northern Hemisphere's season.

Checking the Southern Hemisphere calendar matters considerably here, since these events fall several months apart from equivalent winter illuminations in Europe or North America. The full programme typically runs for several weeks. Dressing warmly for evening viewing also matters considerably given the cooler night-time temperatures.
