Best winter illumination destinations in Africa

Vibrant urban light displays and seasonal festive paths in Africa

Winter illuminations in Africa are mostly a mall and shopping center tradition, newer and smaller in scale than in Europe or Asia, which keeps them limited to a handful of the continent's bigger cities. This means that we are keeping this list rather short.

Cape Town centers much of its display around the V&A Waterfront, where a large Christmas tree and string lights along the harbor draw evening crowds each December. Johannesburg spreads its lights across shopping malls and some residential streets, with the tradition growing steadily over the past decade. Nairobi's displays are concentrated in its shopping centers too, a newer addition to the city's December calendar that has expanded in recent years.

Visiting in the weeks before Christmas rather than after matters here, since most displays come down shortly after the holiday itself. Evenings can turn surprisingly cool in all three cities, especially in Johannesburg and Nairobi given their high altitude, so a light jacket is worth packing even in summer.

Johannesburg
Vibrant city life meets rich history
A gold rush in 1886 started this city. Today festive lights fill the Johannesburg Zoo, where glowing life-size animal sculptures line the paths. Melrose Arch adds lights, a roller rink and dining under the stars. Residents in Bryanston decorate their homes along Moray Drive for free public viewing.

Mountains, Beaches and a Vibrant Culture
Adderley Street has festive lights between Strand and Wale Streets. They switch on around sunset each day. A switch-on show with entertainment and displays opens the lights. At the V&A Waterfront the Joy From Africa event has large installations made with local artists. They celebrate Table Mountain and the Bo-Kaap.

Nairobi
Where urban life meets wild adventures
Fireworks burst over the Kenyatta International Convention Centre when its lights go on for the festive season. Malls compete with large festive displays. Hotels put up tall Christmas trees covered in lights. Nairobi National Park borders the city, so lions live within view of the skyline.
