High-speed roller coaster complexes and franchise-themed parks in Asia
Asia's theme parks lean heavily on beloved characters and franchises, and several of the world's most visited parks call this continent home.
East Asia's biggest parks are known for their level of detail, with entire lands built around a single film or story and lines that can stretch for hours. Southeast Asia often takes a different approach, with parks built indoors or partly under cover to escape the heat and humidity outside. Monsoon season can shape a visit too, since heavy rain is common in parts of the region during certain months. Newer parks across the continent have leaned into technology, with rides and shows built around screens and effects rather than height and speed alone.
The theme park destinations on our list for Asia combine long running franchise favorites with newer parks still building an international following. Comfortable shoes and a plan for the heat come in handy here.
Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983 and DisneySea followed in 2001. Both are just across the bay in Chiba. Tokyo Dome City has a coaster that runs through the hole of a giant Ferris wheel. Sanrio Puroland in Tama is an indoor park full of Hello Kitty.

The resort is about 15 minutes by train from Tokyo Station. Fantasy Springs, a new area, opened in 2024.

Spring and autumn bring mild days, which suit a full day outdoors at Universal Beijing Resort. The resort opened in September 2021 in the Tongzhou district. It has Harry Potter, Transformers, Kung Fu Panda and Minions areas. Hogwarts castle is the centrepiece of the Harry Potter area. Summer is hot and winter is cold.

Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi are nearby. The Yas Marina Circuit hosts a Formula 1 race each year.

Minion Land opened in 2019. Revenge of the Mummy is an indoor coaster that runs in the dark. The park opened in 2010 on Sentosa.
The island was once called Pulau Blakang Mati, which means island of death from behind in Malay. It became Sentosa, meaning peace and tranquillity, in 1972. A cable car links it to the mainland. Beaches, a water park, an aquarium and Universal Studios share the island.
The park sits on reclaimed land along Tokyo Bay in Urayasu. It opened in 1983. A glass roofed arcade called World Bazaar leads to Cinderella Castle and seven themed lands. Beauty and the Beast area opened in 2020 with a trackless ride in a giant teacup.
Friends often wear matching headbands and swap into school uniforms for photos here. Lotte World Adventure is an indoor park with a gold castle and a parade. Magic Island sits on a lake with outdoor rides. Lotte World Tower, at 555 metres, rises next door.
