Best rainforest destinations in Europe
Rare pocket river canyons and dense mossy woodland trails in Europe
Most people don't expect rainforest in Europe, but the wet Atlantic coast and a few islands have exactly that. These are cool, mossy forests where almost every branch is covered in ferns and lichen.
Madeira and the Canary Islands have misty laurel forests, Ireland, Britain and Galicia have old oak woods dripping with moss, and Norway and Georgia add rarer types, from lichen-covered spruce to something close to real jungle.
Rain is the whole reason these forests exist, so a good waterproof jacket and boots with grip matter more than sunscreen. Spring and fall often look the greenest, while summer brings more hikers to the famous trails. Some paths are short and easy, others are steep, muddy and best done with a local guide.
