Traditional island celebrations and contemporary music festivals in Oceania

Oceania's festival scene is younger overall than Europe or Asia's, but no less distinctive: large-scale light and music events transform major cities each year, while world music festivals have built serious reputations over several decades. Pacific Island cultural festivals add a different, older layer entirely.

The festivals on this list range from major city-wide events with significant international programming to smaller cultural celebrations rooted in specific island communities. Some are built around music, others around light, food or heritage.

Checking the Southern Hemisphere calendar matters here, since the region's festival seasons often run opposite to equivalent events in Europe or North America. Ticket releases for the biggest events tend to sell out within hours. Following local event listings closely in the weeks beforehand also helps catch smaller, related celebrations worth adding to an itinerary.
